Product
Pyrethrum (Tanacetum cinerariaefolium) is a daisy-like perennial plant, the flowers of which contain pyrethrins which have insecticidal properties but are safe for humans and animals. Naturally occurring pyrethrins break down quickly when exposed to light or eaten by mammals.
The Australian pyrethrum industry is currently located in northern Tasmania, and is only second to Kenya in scale of production. The Australian industry is based upon improved varieties and mechanisation. Production requirements are described in the Agriculture Note available through http://www.ozrural.com or http://www.nre.vic.gov.au.
Marketing
To produce pyrethrum, growers require a contract with Botanical Resources Australia.
