12. New Crop Electronic Bulletin Board

Notes contributed by Gerry Kregor, New Crops Project, Department of Plant Production, The University of Queensland, Gatton College, Lawes, Queensland 4343

Those readers whose interest in new crops is combined with some computing skills may be interested in a new crops bulletin board run from Purdue University in Indiana, USA. This is one of a group of bulletin boards known as Scholarly Electronic Conferences.

In essence, it is the electronic equivalent of a paper run or mailing list. Following an application to subscribe to the group, the Email address of the subscriber is added to the list for the nominated conference. All messages sent to the list are distributed to all subscribers, and any ensuing discussions are held in open forum. If an Email address is included with the message other subscribers may reply directly. Once contact has been established personal dialogue can be entered into.

The procedure to subscribe is simple and involves sending the following Email message:

LISTSERV@VM.CC.PURDUE.EDU. Nothing should be placed in the message box but the following line should be included in the body of the text:

SUBSCRIBE NEWCROPS< Your name, Institution>.

Confirmation of the subscription will be sent along with a README file.

To post information or questions to the group the message should be sent by Email to:

NEWCROPS@VM.CC.PURDUE.EDU
