The Sixth Conference of the Australasian Council on Tree and Nut Crops Lismore NSW
11-15 September 1995
This Conference has the theme ' Successful Horticulture for the Future' and will cover the marketing, innovation, integration and sustainability of tree and nut crops. The range of tree crops to be examined has been extended and, in addition to fruit and nut trees, will include perennials and shrubs, tree symbiots, timber and tree crop processing. The Conference will be held in Lismore, northern New South Wales, in the heart of Australia's principal subtropical fruit and nut production region. Program information and registration forms will be distributed in January 1995.

Third National New Crops Symposium

The Third New Crops Symposium will be held from 22-25 October 1995 in Indianapolis, Indiana at the Adam's Mark Hotel, adjacent to the Indianapolis Airport. The theme of the Conference will be 'New Crops: New Uses, New Technologies'. The objectives of the symposium are threefold: (1) to identify promising new crops and plant products and update new crops research, development and technology; (2) to encourage new directions in national and state new crop policies; and (3) to develop strategies for commercialisation.

This training program is sponsored by the Section of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants of the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS) and co-sponsored by Purdue University, the University of Massachusetts and the Program for Collaborative Research in the Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Illinois at Chicago. This is the second biennial training program in aromatic and medicinal plants and the focus will be on germplasm collection and preservation, crop production, processing, quality control and marketing. The program will be beneficial to those seeking training in economic botany and in the pharmaceutical and industrial products area. The registration fee for participants is US $1800.

This symposium will address aspects such as agronomy, breeding, policy and economics, agro-technology, industrial processing and utilization and environmental impact as they relate to existing and new potential industrial crops such as oil and fibre crops, crops for production of carohydrates or pharmaceuticals and crops producing other special compounds for industrial application. The symposium will consist of invited and selected submitted papers in plenary and parallel sessions.

Parallel sessions will consist of contributed papers discussing policy, economics, marketing, cultivation and breeding, processing and products in the field of oils, carbohydrates, fibres and proteins for special industrial markets as well as products based on the above renewable resources (such as polymers, inks, glues, coatings, lubricants, fibres for reinforcement, foams and biofuels).

The First Australian New Crops Conference will be held at The University of Queensland, Gatton College over 3 days from 9-11 July 1996. Gatton College is situated about 90 km from Brisbane and has full residential facilities. This national Conference is being organised by The University of Queensland, The CSIRO Division of Tropical Crops and Pastures, The Department of Primary Industry Queensland and NSW Agriculture in collaboration with State, Federal and Territory Departments of Agriculture and commercial organisations.
The theme of the Conference is "New Crops: New Hope for Australian Agriculture". The objectives of the Conference will be to: (1) develop a policy and approach on new crop R&D in Australia; (2) review new crop work in Australia; (3) identify new commercial initiatives in new crop R&D; (4) foster cooperation in new crop R&D for mutual benefit; (5) consider establishment of an Australian New Crops Research and Development Association (ANCRADA); and (6) consider the establishment of an Australian New Crops Journal.
The program will comprise plenary sessions on new crop policy (national and international); economics and marketing; production; processing; extension and information systems; and reviews of new crop evaluation, germplasm and breeding. Concurrent sessions will be run with contributions on individual crops in the groups cereals and pseudocereals; grain legumes; oilseeds; industrial crops; fibre crops; fruits and nuts; vegetables; floral, land-scape and landcare plants; and medicinal, herb, spice, aromatic, essential oil and bioactive crops.

The International Symposium on Research and Utilization of Crop Germplasm Resources will be held in the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), 5 km from the centre of Beijing from 1-3 June 1995. The meeting will be organised by CAAS, The Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Agriculture, China in cooperation with FAO, The International Plant Genetic Resources Institute and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. The objectives of the meeting are (1) to exchange ideas and expertise on crop germplasm resources research; (2) to promote exchange and collaboration on crop germplasm resources in order to make full utilization for development; and (3) to discuss possibilities and opportunities of cooperative research and development.
