PC-Grin is a series of 117 self-expanding programs containing the database information of the National Plant Germplasm System in the U.S. It is part of the National Genetic Resources Program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS).
The programs are generally the major agricultural crops with some other crop species, e.g. alfalfa, lettuce, soybean and Daucus. Each program is easily installed on a PC once retrieved off the InterNet.
Finding the programs on the Agricultural Research Service main frame can be done in several ways depending on your system:
1. Using Gopher
Type "Gopher gopher.ars-grin.gov"
Follow through the menus and save the appropriate program, e.g., vigna.exe
2. Using World Wide Web
Using the Goto command type the address:
"gopher://gopher.ars-grin.gov/11/npgs"
3. Using FTP
Type "FTP Gopher.ars-grin.gov" or "FTP 192.110.146.3"
Once connected
Type login name of "anonymous"
Type your Email Address as password
Type "cd/pub/pcgrin"
Type "ls" to view the programs available
Type "<get file name>"
Gopher and World Wide Web are more user-friendly but some systems may not have the capabilities. To retrieve the programs onto the PC varies from system to system, but Kermit is a common option.
