21 October 1996

From ASAS Pty Ltd and Hunter Valley Herb Farm

Plant breeding, agronomy research, production and processing of Hungarian condiment paprika is to be undertaken in Australia as a result of an agreement signed between Mr Nick Derera AM FAIAS, of ASAS Pty Ltd and the Hungarian Vegetable Crop Research I nstitute in Kalocsa, Hungary. ASAS will be the licensee of Hungarian condiment paprika varieties (Capsicum annuum cv longum) in the southern Pacific region. An agreement has also been reached between ASAS and the Hunter Valley Herb Farm for commercialisation of this opportunity in Australia.

Mr John Penninger, managing director of the Hunter Valley Herb Farm said that now the prospects to produce Australian equivalents of the famous "Hungarian Sweet-Noble" paprika at import competitive prices were excellent. Paprika powder will be the firs t in a series of value-added products based on this crop.

Mr Penninger's company has been involved in paprika production and processing trials over the past four years. Mr Derera has been conducting private Capsicum breeding research for the past nine years.
