NOTICE: Hard copies of the Australian New Crops Newsletter are available from the publisher, Dr Rob Fletcher. Details of availability are included in the
Advice on Publications Available. The three cropping options (azuki beans, Kabuli Chickpeas and culinary beans) are at various stages of new crop development.
Azuki Beans are being produced commercially but not in large quantities. Kabuli Chickpeas are well established in some parts of Australia but in other areas do represent a new cropping option. Culinary beans are very much in the development stage with much work still needed in the fields of plant breeding, agronomic management and market acceptance. All have potential in existing and new markets, both domestic and export.
To maximise the potential offered by these crops, growers need to understand the associated risks and in so doing, seek to manage to minimise these risks. Growers need to be aware of threats to returns from various market influences. By examining the p otential market for a given new crop, growers can then determine the effects that both international and domestic supply/demand might have on potential dollar returns.
Growers also need to be aware of all quality aspects that can affect the chosen crop. It is essential that growers understand what quality the market demands and then seek to satisfy that demand. It is very much the case with specialist new crops that the market is very unforgiving with lower quality products. Quality management is largely agronomically based and growers must be aware of these production aspects.
By achieving a sound understanding of the various market influences and quality aspects, growers are well on the way to achieving success with new crop pulses.
