The listing of more than 4500 potential new crops included in the First Edition in December 1993 has been reprinted by botanical name, along with common name(s), crop use, total number of publications mentioning the plant between 1970 and 1996 and the reference publication from which the plant name was originally sourced. As well, graphs of the numbers of publications mentioning each plant during each year of the period 1970 to 1996 have been included to assist in determining whether the plant has attracted any attention and when this occurred. An index of common names is included, linked to the botanical names used in the body of the Listing.
